The Nokia Urbanista Diaries come to an unfortunate end today, as I blog this from my last city, Helsinki, on my last day (heading to the airport shortly). Helsinki feels to be a magical place but 24 hours really is not enough time! I promise this white city of the north that I shall return some day! Although this is the end of my physical journey, I don't think Nokia is done hosting urbanistas. In my meeting with a few of the team yesterday over lunch (including eating yummy smoked raindeer (sorry Roudolph!)) they indicated many of their international offices now want to start organizing urbanista projects. I didn't get a chance to write much feedback or stories of the travel on the go, so the next couple weeks I'll be catching my flickr up to date and expounding a little more on the experience here. Despite the inactivity on this blog, yes, I am still traveling with the Nokia Urbanista Diaries project. Due to the pace of my journey and lack of accessible internet in most stops along the way I have not kept up the posting as I thought I might be able to, but the photos are still going up in near real-time on my flickr stream . Definitely the best reference for following along despite my best laid plans to have more interactive alternatives . Unfortunately, the nseries interface seems to have mostly folded due to inadequate planning for the volume of route data and photos it is trying to serve up. Unfortunate because I think I've been posting some pretty nice photos in the 'urbanista' spirit. I've been to Vienna, Berlin, Milan/Florence, Paris, Bristol. But I have been through Vienna, Berlin, Florence (substituted for Milan), and this morning I am off to Paris. This photo was a relative highlight from Vienna, my first stop. On a subway platform watching a couple kiss and talk. Considering it is a camera phone I am relatively blown away by how I managed to time this one. A favorite so far. More posts soon I hope.

These days, the US Dollar isn't really worth that much. I am not even sure you can get most newspapers for under a dollar. My last trip to the laundry mat certainly didn't qualify. And I'll DEFINITELY notice it during the pending currency conversions to the Euro and the Pound. But the difference of a dollar is another story entirely. WOMWorld was trying to send me my 'Urbanista Kit' which included spare Nokia N82s, batteries, rapid-charger, keyboard, SIMS, and other goodies for the upcoming trip. I got a call day before yesterday from FedEx Trade Network that it was stuck in US Customs due to missing paperwork. With two days before my departure date there was quite a scramble to fax documents and make corrections. One of those items of paperwork I was responsible for. Interestingly the distortion achieved with this simple interaction of the sensor and motion resembles the very popular digital transform manipulation referred to as micro planets , typically achieved with panoramic techniques and coordinate re-mappings. Web creative types listen up! Wouldn't it be cool if you could take all your favorite creative desktop applications and wrap one web community around them, track sources, attribute authors, create, and share! Seems impossible... but that's just what the folks of worth1000.com are trying to do with their new effort, called Aviary [ http://a.viary.com ]! Currently they have a few tools, all written as web-served Adobe AIR/RIA applications, in private Beta. Primarily Pheonix, their brush-based image editing tool. But they also are dropping tantalizing teasers of their others tools on their tool blog , which uses range the gamut including font-creation, pattern generation, 3d-works, image fingerprinting, etc etc. A designer's dream suite, free... and on the web. These insane folks in New York have rolled in an impressive list of up and coming technology, not to mention embracing some ideals about content and rights management that are long overdue. Quick update about the progress of the project with Nokia and WOMWorld beta testing the travel/creative related capabilities of the Nokia N82 phone/camera/platform. Jenifer Hanen's 2 week leg of the journey (through India mostly) has just begun, taking over from Jay who is returning from Thailand. My turn in two weeks, which starts by meeting Jen in Vienna. An update on the travels of Urbanista Diaries particpant Jay : He seems to be having a grand old time in Thailand... gonna be hard to compete with some his experiences in the uniqueness (and cuteness) categories. For example... Jay rides an elephant! And Jay plays with the baby tigers! Oh my god... cute. UPDATE: Jay put video of the cubs up, and it's his longest video posted yet, can't blame him, hard to resist. My trip starts Feb. 23rd where I meet up with Ms. Jen and take over in Vienna, Austria. I am constantly shocked by our shrinking world, technology and communication techniques being much responsible for this shrinking, but also the ease at which we can just hop around the world such as this upcoming trip for the Nokia Urbanista Diaries . But you know what, it was smaller than I thought! This recently came to my attention via a close friend Jason, who enjoys using his academic login to search for random things in Google Scholar . Sitting at the cafe he thought it would be fun to search for "Camera Toss" to see if there have been any mentions of it in academic literature. There had, exactly one relevant entry. If things keep up there will surely be more but it's WHO was responsible for the publication of that ONE, and how random and coincidental it seemed that really caused me to sit back and marvel at the way these things pan out. Quick update to the Nokia Urbanista Diaries project that is underway ( announced previously ). The first "hand-off" between Devin and Jay went smoothly in the real world, perhaps a little bumpy in the virtual world! That's a screenshot of the Nseries interface in Jay's first city, Singapore (refer to previously posted itinerary . Jay is the white photos, Devin (the previous participant) is still visible as the yellow photos because they actually met up on Jay's first stop. But what the hell is that giant white thing! I suspect it is a mis-rendered representation of the route line associated with Jay's flight... whacky. This thing is full of weirdness (see previous post for more on that). GPS ( Global Positioning System ) and GIS ( Geographic Information System ) have historically been some pretty geeky topics. Flickr , with some encouragement from it's very hard-core GeoTagging Flickr user group, was one of the earliest services to really bring this idea of logging location as a context to user-generated media to the masses (the photo-enthusiast masses anyway). Many other services have followed suit, and the prominence of Google Maps and Google Earth have also fueled this whole GIS topic. Now Nokia, with these GPS enabled phones including the Nokia N82 , which I am test driving in participation with their Urbanista Diary campaign, is attempting to demonstrate this "beta" idea of geo-specific story telling such as with a travel diary, with possibility to go "real-time" in this capacity. For sure their are some individual early adopters out there before all this, but is the technology ready for the masses? Perhaps more importantly, are we ...

One of those fronts is being "constantly connected" and in communication via an array of applications on the Nokia N82 , a Symbian S60 3rd Edition platform. Information overload indeed! Continued posting on the Urbanista Diaries topic with the Nokia N82 . The basic idea behind this journey is that we constantly log our positions via a Nokia service and S60 application called SportsTracker , which in theory anyway, allows you also to shoot geotagged photos and have them automatically associated to your path when you push it to the web service. For the Urbanista Diaries however they are re-purposing the SportsTracker back-end and pitching this idea of location specific way to share and tell stories. Early on however there have been some kinks in the wiring it seems. A lot of photos were being dropped by the web service upon upload. To investigate this I did some concrete testing yesterday. I produced a route where I intentionally took photos while the "tracking" features were PAUSED. Thinking this might often be how I'd want to operate if I knew I was entering an area of no GPS coverage such as a big building. The result however is that photos eithe...

One thing I forgot to mention so far. Nokia has a competition that starts today related to the Urbanista Diaries . They are giving away eight N82 models , one a week, for the next 8 weeks of Urbanista. I'm not fully aware of the structure of the competition, something about guessing our photo locations I think, but there should be more info up on this page later today. They'd really do well to send us participants some more of their press-release type content on these things. ;-) Good luck!

I'm undertaking the previously mentioned Urbanista Dairies as an experiment in extreme hyper connectivity, something I usually balk at... but one cannot really judge until one has experienced it, and until now I have only observed, not owning a fancy phone, and not having a data-plan to go with it. But, at least for two weeks, I'm gonna go all out (or try to). So one initial step, I've set up a Jaiku account and added the badge to the sidebar. If you follow me on Jaiku it'll notify you of my flickr photos, blog postings, and twitter-like text postings made during my journey. I've had a twitter for a while, but don't know which one I'll gravitate to in practice. It too is now crammed into the rapidly over-crowding sidebar. (Never had a camera phone until a couple months ago and my SD card reader did not like handling microSD+adapter... finally got a reader that works. Apparently there are some perks involved in running high profile creative blogs. I'm a bit late in announcing this relative to the other participants, but in late Feburary (21st) through early March (8th) I'll be visiting seven major cities in Europe, the final participant in a camera-phone trial project entitled the " Urbanista Diaries " for the Nokia N82 device, which includes a rather advanced point & shoot camera, and GPS tracking, among other features. The project is organized by WOMWorld and the first participant ( Devin Balentina ) is already traveling through the United States!
