Panasonic Lumix G95 Ergonomic evaluation and score 2 July 2019

Hình ảnh
The G95 is the   current iteration of a line which began with the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the G1 of 2008. Along the way the naming system changed from Gx to Gxx but the basic formula has remained true to the original. This is a small (DSLR style) MILC with humptop and handle pitched at the enthusiast user. The G95 represents the best implementation of this line yet. It is an all-round capable model which can tackle most photographic tasks competently. Although it lacks the ultimate high speed performance capability of the latest Sony a6xxx models it is a much nicer camera to use than any of the Sonys and is arguably better suited to a wider range of general photographic challenges. Setup Phase The G95 uses the latest Panasonic menu system with a My Menu, separate video submenu and useful subcategories in the Custom Menu. The graphical user interface is very nice. Like all camera makers Panasonic needs to completely revise its menu system from the ground up to ...

Sony RX100.5A Ergonomic Score 1 July 2019

Hình ảnh
RX100.5A This ergonomic evaluation and score follows my usualschedule which you can read about here. The RX100.5A has the same body and controls as the Mk4.   No surprise therefore that its ergonomic score is almost identical to the Mk4. I have given the   Mk5A an extra point in Setup Phase. It has   an updated version of Sony’s menu system with a My Menu and some improvement to the layout. Otherwise there is no change. That is not good news. Part of the problem with these RX100 models is their diminutive size which to some extent limits options available to the designers. But the Ricoh GR2/3 models are about the same size yet have much more workable controls leading to a higher score. I think the main problem is Sony’s ongoing recalcitrance on the whole issue of the user experience and user interface of its cameras. I believe the only reason Sony is getting away with this is the dismally inadequate competition from Canon, Nikon and the rest. I suspect that if Sony ever p...

Setting up the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.2 Part 2 The Menus 21 June 2019

Hình ảnh
Panasonic cameras including the FZ1000.2 have very good auto pano capability. My apologies for the boring nature of this post.   But menus are like that. Also apologies for the cryptic nature of some of my comments. I lack the energy to fully discuss the pros and cons of every option. The FZ1000.2 has Panasonic’s recently re-vamped menu system with a very nice graphic user interface, submenus in the Custom tab and a My Menu. There is still room for further improvement however. I would like to see the whole menu system revised from scratch with a new set of submenus based on more photographer relevant categories. The basic outline for my suggestion for these is something like: Setup>General/Controls/Viewing/Files Capture>Image/Focus/Exposure/Drive Movie Review Connect As it stands the submenus [camera] and [custom] don’t really mean anything.   All the other camera makers present the user with the same kinds of issues in the menus. In this post I will not deal with Movie ...

Setting up the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000.2 Part 1 The Controls 21 June 2019

This is not Photoshopped apart from cropping and some adjustment to local brightness levels. The gull actually has no feet. It is 3 wing beats from having made a water take-off.  The FZ1000.2 can manage bids in flight and much more quite competently. The original FZ1000,   announced five years ago has been one of the best all purpose, do (almost) everything, freedom-from-changing-lenses camera models that you can buy. The Sony RX10.4 has more lens reach and a faster frame rate for continuous focus but is larger, heavier and much more expensive than the FZ1000. In addition the user interface is not as well designed. The FZ1000.2 is a mild upgrade to the original with most of the changes   going to further improve what was already a pleasing user experience. In addition there are several upgrades   to autofocus capability which I will discuss in this post as they affect the way the camera is best set up and operated. Accessories One of the nice things about this camer...

Sony RX100.5A Setting up the controls 18 June 2019

Hình ảnh
I keep coming back to the RX100 series Sonys despite their compromised ergonomics and user interface for five reasons: Zoom lens of very good to excellent optical quality (better than LX100), more reliable focusing than the LX100, EVF, hinged screen (better than fixed), very good image quality.  Sony’s RX100 series   models have been industry leaders in the compact camera world since the original RX100 in 2012. The RX100.5A continues the tradition of packing a very high level of   features, specifications, image quality and performance into a very small package.     The downside of making a complex device so small is a less than wonderful user interface, made worse by Sony’s poor utilisation of the controls which are there. It is therefore important to maximise the utility of the available controls. First steps Some accessories can improve the user experience. * Accessory handle. Why Sony puts these cameras out with no handle at all is an abiding mystery to me. ...

Sony RX100.5A SmallRig 2248 accessory grip 15 June 2019

Hình ảnh
In my previous post about the Ricoh GR3 I commented that there is no aftermarket for accessory grips because the designer got it right from the start. That is not the case for any of Sony’s RX100 series cameras all of which are sold with no handgrip at all.   Why Sony does not simply copy the essential shape and handle configuration of the GR cameras I have no idea. Whatever the reason they don’t and this spawns a little industry providing various aftermarket gripping solutions for the RX100 models. Sony does have the AGR2 stick-on grip which certainly improves holding. They should include this in the box with every camera. If it costs Sony as much as a dollar I would be surprised. But to buy it separately, retail in Australia costa $19. This is ridiculous on a camera costing AUD1049. Anyway, moving on, the AGR2 and similar stick-ons from various makers   are better than nothing. There is another type of accessory grip often referred to as L-style.   Various interpretatio...
